Red Warrior Stadium

Non-Kelantanese, stay away from this post. Kelantan's football has been on the rise nowadays. The 'Red Warriors' are the heroes, the heart and soul, of most Kelantanese, if not all of them. Whenever they play, wherever they play, the stadium will be full. Even more so if they were playing at the Sultan Muhammad IV stadium, a host for approximately 30,000 fans, we could see a sea of red flooded it. Built in 1967, this stadium could no longer bear the burden of having to cater for the maximum capacity, thus a call for a new stadium with a larger space has been made. Accordingly, the Menteri Besar of Kelantan has announced that a new stadium with the maximum capacity of 40,000 will be built in Pasir Putih.

Now, it will be further away from the capital, but if you are a true fan, a little travel would not bother, wouldn't it?

It was not as I had expected....

I was marking PKBS 2, and I came across this essay from one of my pupils. Even though there were still plenty of grammatical mistake, the plot of the story really interest me.

It was not as I had expected when my parents told me that they will have their candlelight dinner at a grand hotel in the town.

"What!" I protested.
"Oh, Darvin. Just stay at home as tomorrow you'll have your English's paper, right?" mom asked politely.
"Ah, that's right," I mumbled.

Then, they ( ) gone. I was lonely again in this enormous mansion or I should called it as ( ) 'castle'. I was the only son of one loaded couple that was my mom and dad. I was thankful as I was born ( ) ( ) silver spoon in my mouth.

Then, one idea knocked my mind. My plan was to ask Daren and Darvichi ( ) came to my house and hang out with me. So, I speeded to upstairs and gave a call for those kids. They were my best buddies ever since I was six. Coincidently, (their both) parents were not at home tonight. So, we had our deal!

So, I cleaned up my bedroom that was when you saw into it, it was ( ) a great disaster ( ) happened. Five minutes ( ) past ...

KNOCK.KNOCK.

Then, I stood up. I took a look at the clock. How fast they were? Is that they were coming with Superman? I headed to downstairs and unlock the door. I opened up the black marmar door and ( ) shocked. It was not them. In front of me, there was a tall women standing with her lovely straight hair facing my face.

Then, I asked the women.

"Erm, miss. Who are you?" I said in low vox.

Out of the blue, she turned around. I ( ) stunned for a while. She ( ) just like a princess from the heaven. Her pale face, rounded blue eyes and reddish lips freezed me. Then ...

CLANG.

The teapots and chip pan was clittering in the kitchen. Then, I turned around to see what was going on. I turned back for ( ) unknown sabi women before. I was extremely shocked. She was gone! Where was she? It was impossible that a women would ran away through my alarmed-gate without any sounds.

Then... CLANG.

It happened again. I slowly lock the door and creeped to my kitchen.

"Hello. Who is that? Can you hear me ( ) ". I asked.

SILENT.

It made my hair stood up. It just freak me out. Out of the blue, DARVIN! Darvici and Daren shrieked from behind. I close my eyes tightly and my body was extremely shivered. The tears was filled up in my eyes. In my whole life time, I had never been so frightened.

Then, I stood up and stared to them. Ah, it was all because of them. They were laughing out loud on the floor. They cannot stopped laughing. They told me that it was all their works. They just want to make some jokes with me.

"Hahaha. You are just the funny one!" Daren said while laughing.

"Stop it. Don't make that stupid joke next time. You are totally make me dying." I shrieked.

They started to laugh again.

"So, just spill the beans now! Where did you get the beauty?" I asked.

"What beuty?" They ( ) confused.

I ( ) puzzled. If she was not one of their plan. who was that?

English Weeks

Last week, the English Panel had conducted a preliminary for some English programs in order for the pupils to effectively use the English language. The programs were divided according the levels:
  • Choral speaking for lower secondary (Forms 1, 2 and 3)
  • Poem recitation for both levels
  • Drama for form 4
  • Public speaking for form 5
I was involved in helping my pupils in at least 3 of these programs (minus Choral speaking because I only teach upper secondary):
  • Poem recitation for 5E
  • Drama for 4B
  • Public speaking for 5A
All managed to go to the finals this Wednesday.

The main characters of Gulp & Gasp: Crouch, Lord Septic, Rose & Percy

Three of these SMKCE's beauties will represent the district this year.

The Three Princesses

The selection ended yesterday. 3 new faces emerged to represent SMKCE to the state selection early next month. Interestingly, one of them is a beginner, learning the moves just last week, while the two others have played before this, although with limited skills. Now, my task is to hone them to become formidable chess players within a month time. Hopefully, one of them will start playing with the best at the nationals by flying the state flag high.

1. Maznie Madri (1 Arif)

This girl also plays hockey, and was just coming back from a hockey tournament that evening to become third in her chess category. What a glorious day for her as the hockey team also managed to win their game. She has a very aggressive style; I saw her attacking with the Black pieces!

2. Nurul Asyikin Anuar (1 Arif)

A very quiet girl, but unpredictable at the board. She always asks me questions in training whenever she does not understand the position. With time on her side, she will get even better with this studious attitude.

3. Nik Shamiera Adnan (5 Arif)

A complete beginner and an unpolished gem. She has the tendency for quick learning, eventhough she always asks me to become patient for her slowness. However, time is her enemy, because she is already in Form 5. I regret overlooking her last year, but am happy to push her as far as she can go this year.

SUICIDE (Bunuh Diri) at KB Mall

I was shocked when I heard about the latest furor at KB Mall. I girl unsuccessfully attempted suicide which, in her opinion, will settle all her problems. I don't know how or why she ended up on the hedge, but her act got me thinking - is this what our youths have been reduced to?

In a nation, youths should be the one who we can rely upon. They should be the one who have the strong will, the courage and the hunger to make our nation stronger in the future. However, our youths have been hit with dangerous diseases. Drugs, immorality, indiscipline and many other weakening ailments have made our youths something of a weakness in our quest to become budding nation. Money, which should be used to build nation, is used to cure these illnesses instead. Think about what our nation should have been if we have not been troubled with these maladies? We should have conquered the world, as what a wise man once said:
Give me ten youths and I will conquer the world!

Are We Correct in Making British English Our English?

Pupils in Malaysia always get confused in spelling some of the English words such as neighbour (neighbor) and colour (color). Here, we should enlighten them on the two mainstream English spelling they often mistakenly used. However, I'm not going into details for all the differences, like in the wikipedia, or the spelling, like in this link, rather I will make it simple for the pupils to understand it according to my own opinion.

Football (British) vs Soccer (US)

You don't have to be a genius to see that the sport involved is played using foot, with the exception of the goalkeepers. The word 'football' clearly indicates this, while 'soccer' is nothing that we can comprehend.

Toilet (British) vs Restroom (US)

Toil means 'to work; to labour'. We use the word toilet here instead of restroom because we know that in this place we toil a lot, not resting! I can't imagine myself resting while taking a dump; it really needs hard work.

Lift (British) vs Elevator (US)

There is no difference in meaning for both words, as both means 'to carry something from lower to higher position'. However, it will be easier for our speaking when we say 'lift' (one syllable) instead of 'e.le.va.tor' (four syllables), don't you think?

And finally,

England vs America

We are learning English, not Amerish or whatsoever. Thus, we can see that English should be derived from England, and we know that England is part of British soil, not in the United States.

So, to conclude, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, we Malaysians are correct in making British English as our English.

My Student and Scoliosis. HELP!

I watched in pain when I visited her the day before her surgery. She looked so pale, anxious to know what will happen to her future. She was eager to take the exam; to write an essay for her favourite English subject, but I assured her that her health was more important and she could write plenty of essays for me after getting better. She was diagnosed with Scoliosis, an abnormality in the spine. This results in her uneven shoulders, and frequent back pains, thus her decision (or her family's, I don't actually know) for the surgery was justifiable. Or, is it?

Today, after the surgery and several days at the hospital, she is permitted to return home. However, she is not to bend her body for at least a year! I don't know about you, but I find it difficult to perceive that a teenager has to endure this pain. She even has to take SPM exam at the end of this year! This prompts me to rummage through the Internet about this Scoliosis, and what I found in one of the site I visited is very intriguing. It claims that there is actually no medical justification for surgery, rather it is a cosmetic one! However, I'm not going to be swayed by this one article, which is probably written by a person who failed her surgery, but it still makes me anxious whether her decision to have it before her SPM exam is a correct one. There are actually exercises and corrective braces to consider against surgery, but still the decision has to be made by her.

Hopefully, she will heal in time for her SPM. We; your friends and teachers; wish you a speedy recovery.

You'll Never Walk Alone

Why do I bother to write about the LFC vs Man United game when everything has been written by the LFC fans all over the world? I surely not writing this out of conformity, rather I'm writing it to show how I feel. After all, that is what blogging is about, right? Surely football fans must ask this question first - why do we support a football team? Well, for me, it is all about togetherness; to feel a sense of belonging; to share the same passion with others. It is also the question of loyalty; that is to be with the same team regardless of its ups and downs. And LFC fans are known for their passion and loyalty towards their club, even after finishing 7th last season. Or even after a certain el Nino quits the team for 'glory' with other 'big' club. Or even after a dismal start to the current campaign under ex-manager Roy Hodgson. Now, seemingly, we are out of mediocrity, even if there is one, with the current rich of form where we are winning a lot more than we are losing under our 'new' hero Kenny Dalglish. Such passion which drives me to wear the LFC jersey when we were losing games, what more when we are winning games now. And of course, the win over bitter rivals Manchester United taste sweeter than 4 spoonfuls of sugar put into a small cup of tea. Today, I was smiling all day at my school, much to the disgust of several other teachers who support the Devils. They congratulated me reluctantly, but I accepted them nevertheless. They were perplexed as how confident I was yesterday when I predicted Carroll would get a hattrick with a 3 - 0 scoreline, only for the nearest of miss when it was Dirk Kuyt who came with the hattrick with a 3 - 1 scoreline. If only they had the guts to ask me that, I would have answered them with this:

"With fans like me, LFC will never walk alone"

To recap last night's game, here are some pictures taken from various sources:

SPM Result is out today (28 February 2011)?

I got many texts from my students asking for the date of the SPM 2010 results. Well, for your information, we teachers are also in the dark on this subject matter. There are so many dates suggested - today, 15th March, 23rd March etc. Some of them also suggested that the result will be out AFTER the PLKN programmes are finished, so that the candidates involved with PLKN will continued their programmes without any disturbance.

Let the speculation continue, shall we?

AAMIR KHAN Has Done It Again!

Even if you are not a Bollywood fan, you should watch these two films if you are a teacher - Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots. The two films revolve around teaching methods which I think could be used in our everyday classroom. Although the target audience in each film are different, the message is the same - imparting knowledge to the learner. In Taare Zameen Par, Aamir explores the life of a dyslexic student, and the methods which are best suited for this kind of disability. In reality, it is hard for us teachers to know if our students are dyslexic. We actually have to be aware of the repeated signs or common mistakes usually made by a dyslexic. Now those who are teaching the back classes should see whether the errors made by their students are the same with what were portrayed in this film.

Whereas in 3 Idiots, Aamir showcases about the difference of 'training' and 'educating'. The setting is an engineering college, and Aamir is a student who disapproves the methods used in the education system. He even points out that 'cramming bookish definition' into your memory is not the best way to learn. I like the part where he describes a book as 'Instruments that record, analyse, summarise, organize, debate and explain information which are illustrative, non-illustrative, hardbound, paperback, jacketed, non-jacketed with a forward, introduction, table of contents, index that are intended for the enlightenment, understanding, enrichment, enhancement and education of the human brain through the sensory root of vision... sometimes touch' which left the lecturer in a state of shock.

So, please take some of your time to watch these masterpiece. I know you will like them very much!

Here are the trailers for Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots.

Who Wants To Be A Linguist?

I thought for some time last week on how to effectively correct my pupils' most common mistakes in their essays. In the end I came up with an idea of using them in a sort of game show titled "Who Wants To Be A Linguist?" (I hope that the producer of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" doesn't come and sue me LOL). The idea is that other pupils will also benefit from their friend's mistakes in a fun way. I made three female pupils to fight against three male pupils with points at stake.

There are two categories of play - Grammar and Idioms. In Grammar category, I took some mistakes from the pupils essays and put it in the questions. For the first round, I underlined the mistakes and asked them to correct them. However, in the second round, I gave a sentence without any underlined words and pupils have to guess where the mistakes are before giving their answers. After each answer, of course, there will be notes on the mistakes and when elaborations needed, I was on hand to help them.

While in Idioms category, I used idioms they wrote, or attempted to write (unsuccessfully most of the time), by giving pictures depicted them. For example, try this picture:

To let the cat out of the bag

For the answer, triple click under the above picture. Here is the complete list of the idioms I used:

To let the cat out of the bag – (to reveal a secret) It is in your interest not to let the cat out of the bag in the company of friends or foes.

To cry over spilt milk – (regret for a wrong action which cannot be undone) If something wrong has happened, there is no use crying over spilt milk.

To kill time – (to waste time) It is a bad habit to kill time during office hours.

Out of pocket – (without money) I am out of pocket since many days.

To make the pot boil – (to earn one’s living) One has to work hard to make the pot boil.

To face the music – (to meet the consequences) If you deliberately do something wrong, you will have to face the music.

Proud as a peacock – (very proud) Every person in authority is proud as a peacock.

Hard nut to crack – (a difficult problem) Rising prices and falling incomes is a hard nut to crack.

To blow one’s own trumpet – (to brag; to praise oneself) Every politician blows his own trumpet.

Apple of one’s eye – (very near and dear) Every child is the apple of his mother’s eye.

Prick one’s ears – (to listen carefully) When the teacher announced prizes, every student pricked his ears.

To go through the mill – (to get education and training, suffering etc) You have to go through the mill before you can make a choice of your career.

Torres scored the 3rd goal

Wolves 0 - Liverpool 3

Last night's game excited me for the first time this EPL season. The pass and move promised by Kenny Dalglish has been delivered in the most promising way, and ended with a goal from the revitalised Torres.

Apart from that, the game also had a wonderful Meireles lob which can be a contender for the goal of the season, and a beautiful female lineswoman who did not make a mistake and got her decisions spot on. What a game.

...

Driving needs patience. PERIOD! There are so many types of drivers on the road, and believe me, not everybody is as patient as you are. Just now at the Sultan Yahya Petra bridge, on my way back home from school, after a lengthy meeting, I was stuck in a traffic jam. There were two lanes which will eventually merge to become one at the entrance of the bridge, and I was on the right lane. Seemingly the correct lane? Not according to those inconsiderate drivers! When you think that having to compete with the left lane was bad enough, imagine my thoughts when I saw those drivers overtook from the left side of the left lane (making a third lane in the process) and popped up at the entrance of the bridge. Now that was enough to make my blood boiling, but there was nothing I could do apart from sitting tight.

Ethical driving? That was in the past.

But not all things make me mad. This morning, when I weigh myself up, I was surprised to see that my weight now is...

The First Week of 2011...

... went very well. Sunday was a day off due to our national football team winning the AFF Suzuki Cup by beating the Indonesians 4-2 on aggregate. It was some time ago since I enthusiastically cheered for our football team, but this win was a memorable one, especially when one of the national heroes lives near my house. On that day also, I sent my youngest brother to PLKN. He took the bus provided for him and his 'chosen' friends at Pengkalan Chepa.

School also started smoothly. I teach Form 5A, 5E, 5S and 4B which means I have front classes (5A and 4B), a class in the middle (5E) and the last class (5S). I haven't started the Form 4 lesson because they had orientation programme, but I have already started the Form 5 lessons. I broke the ice between me and the pupils using the charades game. They were given words which they had to either act out or draw, whichever was easier to them. Finally, Thursday was a historical day for me, at least, because on that day the school was flooded and water flowed into classes.

Resolution Review

I stated 5 resolutions at the start of the year, and today is the best day to review whether they have been fulfilled.

1. I will start the year at my new school, SMK Chabang Empat, Tumpat, being an exemplary English teacher for form 4 and 5 students.

Well, I think we have to wait for the SPM results before deciding whether academically this resolution is fulfilled. As for the Form 4 students, their final exam results will be the decider. In terms of their interest in learning the language, I think that I had decently done my job. They surely got something from my lessons, although their daily usage of English is nothing that I should be proud of. On the whole, I have yet to change the school's culture in learning English as second language.

2. I will upgrade my daily usage of English.

So far, I only use English when speaking with the English teachers. When my students came to see me in the teacher's lounge, however, I tend to speak Malay with them to accommodate them. Worse, I used Kelantan dialect when speaking with other teachers.

3. I will try to improve my chess knowledge in order to become a better coach.

I have read some books and articles (mainly from the Internet), played online games, watched videos, and also entered tournaments in order to improve my skills. I also read a book on coaching in general, not specifically for chess and presented it in my in-service training.

4. I will shed some kilos (hopefully 1okgs) by the year end.

Negative result. My weight is still the same as the start of the year. No gain, no loss. I think this is because the fat has become very stubborn, and I need a major change of diet and a lot of exercises in order for me to get rid of that.

5. I will better my devotions to the Almighty

Insha Allah, I hope that all my prayers, recitations of the Holy Qur'an, and other devotions are accepted by Him. As a Muslim, I must continuously improve in this matter in order to become a better servant.

So, the result?

I will continue all the resolutions for this year, and will achieve a better result by the end of 2011, especially for the number 4, insha Allah. I will keep tabs on my weight and jot down under each of my upcoming posts to monitor the progress. You are also invited to monitor it with me if you want (*-*)

For the start of 2011, my weight is...

#$@p!##@!

I felt really angry today. But I don't know to whom I should be angry with-myself or that #$@p!##@!. The story began in October. I received a message from #$@p!##@! offering me a phone if I 'use' a minimum of RM120 each month for the next three months until December, terms and conditions apply. During that time, my wife's phone was having some problem, so I thought 'Why not?' I rang the #$@p!##@! careline and a guy answered my call. I asked about the offer and its terms and conditions, but he couldn't tell me. Up till that time, I never reloaded more than RM100 a month, but for the offer's sake, I reloaded RM120 for that October, the subsequent November, and this very month. Today, I rang the #$@p!##@! careline again to ask if I am eligible for the phone, but to my surprise, the person who answered my call again didn't know about the offer. She took a lengthy time to check about the offer, but half an hour later, she returned and asked to make more investigation. She offered to call me back, and I duly agreed because I had something to do at that time. After 20 minutes without receiving any phone call, I rang the #$@p!##@! careline for the umpteenth time. This time, another person answered. I asked to talk with the previous person, but without knowing her name or ID number, I couldn't. Thus, I told her about my plight and she told me that I had to 'use' RM120 by calling or text messaging, but not sharing the reload with somebody else. I replied by telling her about my first call to that guy asking for clarification about the terms without success, which in turn made me to misunderstand the true meaning of the word 'use'. Then, she told me that my usage for each month was not enough for receiving the phone, so that's that.

To show you what I missed, here is the picture of the promised phone.

Why English is so Hard

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!

Let's face it - English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger;
Neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren't invented in England.
We take English for granted,
but if we explore its paradoxes,
We find that quicksand can work slowly,
boxing rings are square,
and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing,
grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?

Doesn't it seem crazy that
you can make amends but not one amend.
If you have a bunch of odds and ends
and get rid of all but one of them,
what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables,
what does a humanitarian eat?

Sometimes I think all the folks
who grew up speaking English
should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what other language do people
recite at a play and play at a recital?
We ship by truck but send cargo by ship.
We have noses that run and feet that smell.
We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.
And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same,
while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language
in which your house can burn up as it burns down,
in which you fill in a form by filling it out,
and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

And, in closing, if Father is Pop,
how come Mother's not Mop?
