I was looking through the blogs at Kelantan Bloggers when I saw this. I was an English teacher too, for 11 years, in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas (town and rural) and Tanah Merah (town) until the mid-90's. This student is most likely Malay - he had written it in this language first before translating word for word without taking into account the fundamental differences in both languages.

But there's a plus for him here - he made an effort. Most of the students I had taught could never write more than 120 words - and that too with at least 50% mistakes in spelling, grammar and usage.

This student here - if his desire is strong enough, perhaps he should be encouraged to read... and read. But he must have access to English material.

It's exasperating and sad when I remember many of the students didn't have this. And their homes weren't places where reading was a normal activity.

Hopefully, more students would subscribe to the subsidised copies of NST and The Star... and read them, of course.

If a student starts at Form 3 and continues until the SPM on a steady basis, and assuming that s/he is average and is of "P8 class without the material", I'd say he should get something like C5 at least for the SPM.

Thanks for your comments.. 'He' is a 'She'.. and she is the best student in that class.. and the most hardworking.. but sadly she is now in form 4, next year will be her SPM.. and I wont be teaching her next year because other teacher teaches form 5.. hopefully she will prolong her desire to get better in her English.. I will support her all the way... cheers..
